What you need to know about combining temporary assignments

Temporary work offers unique flexibility for companies and temps alike. If you’d like to combine several temporary assignments to boost your income, or gain more experience through temping, it’s perfectly possible, but you need to respect certain conditions. This dedicated blog article outlines everything you need to know to comply with the law, but also to protect your health.

Is it possible to combine several temporary assignments?

French law allows temporary workers to combine several assignments, either with the same employer or with different temporary employment agencies. This can be an interesting practice if you want to diversify your experience and/or supplement your working hours and income. But there are strict rules governing maximum working hours.

Legal rules for combining several temporary employment contracts

If you want to legally combine several temporary assignments, you’ll need to comply with a few rules concerning maximum daily working hours and rest periods. The main aim of French legislation is to protect employees’ health. Excessive working hours can have consequences for safety, quality of work and long-term health. What’s more, in the event of a work-related accident, you could be held liable.

Maximum working hours

A temporary worker may not work more than 10 hours per day and per week at :
  • 48 hours a week,
  • and 44 hours on average over 12 consecutive weeks.

Respecting rest periods

Rest is essential to protect your health. As such, you must respect the following rest periods:
  • 11 consecutive hours of daily rest,
  • 24 consecutive hours of weekly rest, in addition to daily rest.
These rules are put in place to avoid excessive fatigue and ensure a balance between professional and personal life.
